Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)

Purpose: 

The IBC is a standing committee established to ensure that all activities involving potentially biohazardous materials are conducted in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and applicable University policies. It is entrusted to assist and advise the UNTD community on incorporating good biological safety practices into all activities involving potential biohazardous materials. The IBC seeks to reduce the risk of potential biohazardous threats to the UNTD community, the public, and the environment. IBC is vested with the authority to review and approve practices and procedures regarding research and other activities involving potentially biohazardous materials, direct inspection of facilities where biohazardous materials are used and/or stored, and take appropriate action. The IBC is defined in the National Institutes of Health Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules.

Roster Structure: 

The IBC shall consist of at least four voting members, plus ex-officio members. A representative from Risk Management Services (RMS) shall serve as ex-officio non-voting members of the IBC. At least one individual with no affiliation to UNTD shall be appointed to represent the local community.

Roster Rotation Schedule: 

Three years with staggered terms, and members shall be eligible for re-appointment
